Peebles RFC 1sts Sevens Squad – On Saturday 11th May a sevens squad travel the road down to Philiphaugh for the Selkirk sevens.

Peebles are drawn with Melrose in the second last tie of the first round. First tie kicks off at 2:00pm.

Last Saturday the Peebles Sevens Squad travelled down to Poynder Park for the Kelso Sevens – drawn in the first round with Watsonians – Peebles lost by 47 – 0 and made an early exit.

Last Sunday the Peebles Sevens Squad travelled down to the Haugh for the Earlston Sevens where once more Watsonians lay in wait – and again Peebles lost out ; this time by 31 – 5.

Last weekend a party from Peebles RFC travelled north to Orkney to play in the local club’s sevens, as we have done for many years, but also to celebrate captain Ross Brown’s stag.

On the rugby front Peebles reached the final where they lost out to the home outfit by 26 – 14; – the social side was equally successful and by all accounts a lively time was had by all.

Junior Rugby

Colts – Last Saturday the Colts Sevens squad travelled down to the Jed Thistle Sevens at Riverside Park – unfortunately after defeats from Tynedale and jed Thistle the Colts failed to qualify from the pool stage.

S1 and S2 – A group of 36 S1s travelled down to Southport for a 2-day Sport Tours Under-13 tournament where they played new teams (Southport, Waterloo and Market Rasen), and English rules. The players were split into two equal teams, donning the names of the Blacks and Reds.

Following a Friday filled with travel, laser quest, bowling and a hefty Kangaroo Court, the players arrived at Southport RFC on Saturday in good spirits. First up was a game against each other, followed by tough games against the hosts Southport and Market Rasen. The boys being tested against some physical opponents, but holding their own and scoring some great tries.

On the Sunday they played the same opposition, but what was so impressive was that every player stepped up their performance and gave everything they had, for each other. This was typified by Peebles Reds, who had previously been well beaten by a big Southport side on the Saturday, to lead the game against them on the Sunday until Southport scored to level the game in the dying seconds. At the whistle, the Peebles Blacks sprinted on the pitch to congratulate their team mates for the effort they had shown. That moment summed up what this group are about. Peebles Blacks also performed well and achieved a win over Peebles Reds in the final game.

Overall, every player showed a measured improvement from one day to the next and can be proud of their efforts on this tour. They are a great bunch of boys who always behaved impeccably in Southport, and are a credit to Peebles, the rugby club and the school.

The S2s travelled to Southport for a 2 day U14s tournament against opponents from Wales and England. On a sunny yet windy first day the boys had to adapt to new rules and playing style against some very strong teams, including 2 Leicester Tigers academy sides, but still battled to 2 wins out of their 5 fixtures. The second day saw Peebles come out with massive determination to better their efforts and they produced some superbly controlled rugby, along with many extraordinary individual performances, that halved their rivals previous try counts and enabled them to draw with opponents that bested them the day before. The S2s were excellent both on and off the pitch throughout the weekend and showed genuine grit and a capacity to learn that will make all their coaches at PRFC and PHS proud. The tour itself was a huge success with all thanks going to Margaret and Neil Wolfenden for all their efforts in making it so.

Peebles High School S3 - The Peebles High School S3 Rugby/Hockey Tour to Northern Italy took place from the 5th to the 10th May. Staying close to Lake Garda, the rugby squad played Modena Rugby 1965 on 6th then Rugby Valpolicella on 8th. No report was available at the time of writing.

Piranhas News - Sunday 12 May sees Piranahas at tournaments at Moffat and Dalkeith and training at The Gytes. Watch out for coaches’ emails on where you need to be. The week after it’s the P6 Tour to Stirling and Kinross. Best of luck to them, the good folk who are travelling with them, and of course the local residents!
