Peebles RFC Development News – January 2008

The weather has not been kind to the rugby playing population of Peeblesshire this past month with many fixtures and training sessions having to be cancelled due to the severe weather.

Following the school holidays, we are now back into the swing of things with the sessions both at the school and extra-curricular up and running again.

Representative honours

Congratulations to Stuart Cockburn and Rory Milne from Peebles Colts in being selected in the Borders U-18 squad.  A great achievement for both players and reward for their hard work during this and previous seasons particularly since both players have had to overcome fairly serious injuries in the recent past is testament to their dedication and application to the sport.  The U-18 Inter-District Championship is played on 10th/17th/24th February 2008.

Peebles High School

The High School teams return to action this week with games at S1, S2 and a combined S3/4 level against Kelso (away).  All the players are itching to get back into competitive action again following the break and would appreciate any support from parents/relatives/friends at all the games.  The games this week will kick-off at 10am – all players keep an eye on the Rugby Noticeboard at school for details.

Primary Schools

Next month the Primary Schools programme will start up again and this block I will be taking in the P6 age group.  In a brand new initiative along with the Food Standards Agency, and the respective class teachers, several of the classes will benefit from a Rugby & Healthy Lifestyle lesson.  The programme will run for 6 weeks and focus on activity (rugby) and healthy living and food safety.   We have secured some more funding for this and hope to roll it out to more schools than initially planned.

Minis

Good luck to the P7 squad heading down to Gala this Saturday to play in a tournament there.  Hopefully they can get out of the pool stages and play on the main pitch prior to the Gala v Kirkcaldy game.  All supporters are welcome.

As reported elsewhere in the paper we have now received our Scottish Hydro Electric equipment grant and I’m putting it to good use throughout the area during the various sessions.

Coach Development within Peebles Rugby Club

On a very cold, crisp, Saturday January morning (12th) 11 potential rugby coaches turned out for the very first SRU Foundation Coaching Course run in Peebles.  All 11 coaches put a tremendous amount of effort into the day and successfully completed the course.

This local delivery of coaching courses/updates was an important part of my Development Plan for the club in terms of coach recruitment and development.  From the feedback I have been given it has been a successful start to this phase of coach development within PRFC.

The next step is to provide another of these courses in the near future for any coaches/potential coaches/senior players who assist Piranhas, so if you are interested please get in touch with me for more details.

Coaching Update – for all coaches at all levels

As part of this new programme of Coach Development I will be delivering regular “Coaching Updates” throughout the year in Peebles.  These updates previously were centralised and often meant a number of Club coaches couldn’t attend or were put off due to travel implications, so as with the new localised coaching courses I will now deliver these Update Sessions in Peebles.

They are short (20min) presentations on particular subjects and are applicable to all coaching staff within the club, from Mini to Senior, as well as players who may be interested in coaching as well.  See below for details of the first input and please register interest & attendance via email to me so I can gauge numbers attending.
