Peebles RFC Development News - by Graeme Paterson

Having been in post now for a couple of very hectic, but at the same time extremely enjoyable months, I am pleased to be able to write this first monthly "Peebles Development News".  It will be a brief round-up of what has happened in the previous month, as well as highlighting forthcoming events.

Primary Schools

I have just finished the first block of sessions to all the Primary Schools in the area which saw the target age group this term being P5 (with some composite classes as well).  All were given 4 training sessions focusing on basic passing, catching running allowing them to take part in both Tag & Touch games.  This culminated in the Peeblesshire Schools P5 "World Cup Festival" on Wednesday 3rd October at the Gytes where 180 kids came together and took part in a morning of Touch Rugby.  Thanks go the the S5 & 6 pupils who assisted on the day contributing to the overall success with a great time had by all.

After the October holidays I will be moving on to P7, and some P6, classes in all schools and I'm sure it will be as rewarding as the P5 age group.  I will also be running a new project with one of the classes in conjunction with the Food Standards Agency promoting healthy lifestyles in children with a rugby theme.

High School

High School rugby is fully up and running for the season with good numbers at all years with the school putting out 2 teams at S1 & S2 and 1 team at S3 & Under-16 levels.  All have shown good progress and the S3 team looking particularly strong and they have had good wins in both friendly fixtures as well as the Bell Lawrie U-15 Cup.  The S1 to S3 squads are coached by the school staff  (Mr’s Changleng, Lacon & Henderson along with Allan Clinch) while the Under-16 squad have been under the guidance of myself and Peebles RFC 1st XV members Graeme McKinnon and Dan Boughtwood.  This maintains the strong links between the School and local club which is vital in the development and growth of the game in the area.

On Tuesday the school 1st XV won their first game of this years Bell Lawrie U-18 Cup, defeating Douglas Ewart HS from Dumfriesshire 75 - 0, and that was even missing 7 kicks!!!!  Well done boys and lets see if you can go better than last years quarter-final place.

Coaching

Foundation Level  (Minis) – Local, Peebles based course planned for early December for all prospective Mini-Rugby coaches.

UKCC Level 1 (Midi to Adult) – Next course is at Melrose 17th, 21st & 28th October.  This course will bring you up to date with coaching techniques to assist you coaching all levels from 12yrs upwards.  Excellent, practical course with the emphasis on "how to coach" rather than technical overload!!!

If you are interested in any of these course, or any other course such as Strength & Conditioning, First Aid, Referring please get in touch with me to arrange it.  We are hoping to operate some form of "Reward Scheme" in the club for those willing to undertake the various course and put them to good use throughout the various sections.

If you have any questions or suggestions regarding rugby in the area please get in touch with me through email graemeipaterson@aol.com or telephone (07812 028 172)
