Peebles Make Big Splash in Fundraising Challenge
It's meant to be a day of rest, but on Sunday the Peebles RFC members undertook a challenge of swimming a kilomathon (26km) at Peebles swimming pool.
It was a great effort with just under 40 members turning up to help achieve the goal which included first team squad members, colts, coaches, all-rounder Gary Anderson and the under 16s who had already put in a hard shift on the field too!!
The event was in aid of upgraded equipment at the Hay Lodge Pavillion which is well underway already. The new equipment is to be used to help aid players in rehab (already being well used!!) along with gearing up the Peebles players of the future with various programmes for helping their development into adult rugby along with creating a closer knit club environment.
The event, which is hoping to raise close to £1000, brought together a wide range of abilities along with different shapes and sizes. There were a few more belly flops than dives during the day but the challenge was completed in 40 minutes as everyone worked hard to finish the task at hand. Vice Captain Clark and young Kieran “Heid” Brown started early due to other commitments and managed to rattle off 80 lengths between them to get the boys off to a good start.
There were a few stand out moments from the swim with Coach Jonathon showing the youngsters how its done, Captain Clancy and Greg Raeburn buying into the speedos only attire, Ryan McConnell looking like the hippo off the BBC Scotland adverts and young swimmers Chris Scott and Buster Davidson along with others managing to swim more than most after playing Jed Thistle only a few hours earlier. Moment of the day had to be Matty Carrier walking out to various comments asking if he was wearing a rubber ring…!!
It was a great effort from the Peebles RFC members and showed great club spirit to finish the task. Keep an eye out for the Peebles RFC calendars which capture the whole club set up and are sure to be a great Christmas present for those Gutterbluids out there. Thank you to everyone at the swimming pool for allowing us to hold the event, everyone at the rugby club appreciated the hospitality.
