This could be one of the biggest weekends in the annals of Peebles RFC, on the pitch, with both the 1st XV and the Colts involved in their biggest matches of the season – with promotion possibly beckoning for the senior side and advancement in the National Under 18 Youth League Cup for the Colts. Read on.
Weather permitting tomorrow - Peebles RFC – sponsored by Glenrath Farm Eggs – play their biggest and most important game of the season when they host Howe of Fife at the Gytes in RBS Championship League B. With the two sides sitting first and second in the table, separated by only one match point, this match could be a title decider although there are still some difficult assignments to come on the run-in for Peter Wright’s men, with away matches at Hawick YM and Murrayfield Wanderers to come. Peebles will be looking to avenge the defeat earlier in the season away at Cupar when, by their own admission, the team did not play particularly well, but since then they have hit a rich vein of league form to climb up the table. The kick-off is 3:00pm and it is hoped that a bumper crowd will turn up to cheer on their favourites in what is expected to be an enthralling contest. This match is sponsored by Glenrath Farms’ John Campbell and we all look forward to an exciting match and hopefully a Peebles Victory.
Pitch side catering will be available from Thomson’s Snack van with their usual varied menu of burgers, rolls, hot and cold drinks.
The seconds – sponsored by FIRST XV and rugbystuff.com – are also at home when they play Preston Lodge 2nds in RBS Reserve League East 1 at Hay Lodge Park – Kick off is at 2:00pm for seconds’ fans.
The Colts – supported by BARC Coach Hire – are also playing what could be their biggest match of the season, when they travel into Edinburgh to play Boroughmuir Colts at Meggetland in the first round of the National Under 18 Youth League Cup. There may be spaces on the team bus for travelling Colts fans – check the club website or noticeboard for travel arrangements. The kick-off in Edinburgh will be at 14:00 with transport leaving at 11:45am.
Gytes Gossip sends warmest congratulations to Richard Harrison and Scott Halliday of Peebles Colts who have both been selected to play for Edinburgh in the pro-aligned selection fixture against Glasgow on Wednesday 13th February and for the Scotland Select side to play the Scottish Exiles on Sunday 17th February. Both of these fixtures are the next level up from Borders selection on the way to selection for Scotland Under-18.
The big winner last weekend was the weather when the frost and snow forced the postponement of all club fixtures – we await re-arrangement dates for replays.
A timely reminder that the club will be holding its annual Burns Supper on Sunday 27th January 4:00pm for 5:00pm start - as usual it will be free to senior citizen members but this year it will be open to other members at a cost of £10 – names to Jim Currie, Gordon Brown or the bar steward. The haggis will be piped in by Ross Brown; Graeme Murray will address the haggis and toast the Bard; the Lassies will be toasted by Dale Clancy – the club captain and Lynn Smellie will reply for the Lassies. There will be a variety of entertainment throughout the supper.
On Saturday 2nd February there will be a ‘Bucking Bronco’ night for all the aspiring cowboys and cowgirls in the membership.
