Tennent’s National League Division 2
On Saturday 19th January, Peebles RFC – sponsored by Stobo Health Spa – make the trip down to Galloway to play Dumfries Saints in a Tennent’s National League 2 match. Both teams sit mid-table and, with the earlier home fixture ending in a draw, a close encounter is expected once more. Kick off is at 2:00 pm for travelling fans and there may be some room on the team coach which leaves at 11:00am.
Last Saturday Peebles RFC – sponsored by Stobo Health Spa – were due to play Highland RFC in a Tennent’s National League 2 fixture – however the fixture was postponed due to the untimely passing last Thursday of Alasdair “Porky” Wymess, the Highland Head Coach.
Porky had been a stalwart of Highland, having played under the legendary Nairn McEwan through the 70s and 80s as well over 50 times for the old North & Midlands District team.
He will be missed by all the Rugby Community and our thoughts are with his family and everyone at Highland Rugby.
The re-arranged fixture has been provisionally scheduled for Saturday 6th April.
On Saturday 19th January, Peebles Reds – sponsored by The Crown Hotel Peebles – are also on the road when they travel into Edinburgh for a Tennent’s Reserve League East 2 fixture against Lismore/Portobello. Kick off is at 2:00pm for travelling Reds fans.
Last Saturday Peebles Reds – sponsored by The Crown Hotel Peebles – had Leith Rugby Club as their first foots to the Gytes for a Tennent’s Reserve League East 2 fixture. Reds won this match convincingly in front of a good sized crowd by 106 – 0, their superior fitness being a telling factor especially in the second half. Despite the score-line the Leith players never gave up competing until the final whistle and enjoyed the Peebles hospitality in the clubrooms after the match.
On Saturday 19th January, the Colts entertain near neighbours Lasswade for a friendly fixture – kick off at Hay Lodge Park is at 10:00am for Colts fans. The under 16’s will also be playing Lasswade at Peebles High School – kick off at 10:00am.
Last Saturday the Colts had a friendly fixture away at Haddington against Haddington Colts returning convincing winners by 49 – 7. A combined under15/16 squad also went to Haddington on Saturday and were narrowly defeated by 5 tries to 4. The Peebles side contained 8 under 15s while their opponents were predominately in the upper age group. However the youngsters gave a good account of themselves – many playing out of position –with Patrick Cannon, Ewan Hunter and Oscar Weipers tackling well above their weight. Reece Hunter meanwhile showed what a fine prospect he is at prop for future teams. From the older boys Evan Maciver and Finlay Sinclair were outstanding in the loose. Try scorers for Peebles were; Evan Maciver, Jay Coltman, Frey Maciver and Alexander Walpole with Frey kicking 1 conversion.
Training again at Hay Lodge and High School on Sunday. Week after there is a Round Robin at Stewart Melville for some of the year groups, so watch out for emails from coaches checking availability. It’s a later start than normal at 1pm. P6 Tour is building a head of steam as kit sizing and fundraisers are being investigated. Tape measures and wallets at the ready!
