Peebles win Melrose 7'S !!!!!
12 April 2009

Yes the headline is correct Peebles did win the Melrose 7's last Sunday when the Peebles RFC Under-16 squad took part in the Drummond Cup hosted by Melrose RFC at the Greenyards.

In glorious conditions the Peebles squad looked impressive throughout the tournament which saw the first part of the competition as a round-robin with Peebles, Biggar and Howe of Fife in Group A and Melrose, North Berwick and Heriot's in Group B.

The boys in red and white played with confidence, style and a strong physical edge during their 2 pool games and comfortably saw off Howe of Fife and Biggar to set up a semi-final with Heriot's, who had looked a fairly handy side in their ties.

Peebles began the semi-final the more nervy and Heriot's stretched out into the lead with 2 early tries, but thankfully the Peebles boys settled down into their usual patterns of play and replied just before half-time.  The second half saw 2 more Peebles tries to haul them into a 17-12 lead with seconds remaining however a loose pass was pounced on by a Heriot's player and he scampered over for the try.   With the scores tied all the Heriot's kicker had to do was knock the conversion over to see them into the final, however with some words of "encouragement" from feisty Peebles scrum-half David Wills, the kick was sliced and extra-time loomed.   The large travelling Peebles support breathed a sigh of relief and the boys picked themselves up and started again, and with only a minute or so of extra-time gone Peebles picked up the pace and stretched the Heriot's defence once again to touch down and book a place in the final.

The final was a one-sided affair against North Berwick with Peebles showing greater all-round skills and fitness to register a 45-7 victory to round off a great day.

Peebles were no doubt the best side on display at the Greenyards on Sunday and thoroughly deserved to lift the Cup and no individual could be singled out as the outstanding player as this victory was built on an outstanding team effort with everyone pushing themselves to the limit for the team.

If this impressive squad can stay together for years to come it may be that it won't be the last time we hear the announcer declaring Peebles as the winners at Melrose!!!!!

The squad Cameron Murray (Captain), Dalton Hall, Rohan Maciver, Ross Wilson, Gavin Pringle, Kenneth Rodger, David Wills, Greg Raeburn, Ross Brown, Liam Hope, Gregor Cursiter, Craig Balmbra
