Peebles U16's, sponsored by BorderMix, made the short trip to Hartreemill to play Biggar U16’s in round one of the Edinburgh & District U16’s Regional Cup, on a windy but thankfully dry Sunday afternoon.
Hats off to Biggar who, despite being short of a couple of players at the start, were determined to ensure that both sides could get some rugby under their belts. Peebles came out of the gates strongly drawing tacklers to put their wide players into space. There was hard fast running from both teams but it was Peebles who turned early pressure into points with a couple of tries. Some of the offloading, picking and driving were taken straight from the indoor trainings sessions up in The High School. The scoreboard continued to tick over for Peebles although Biggar had periods of pressure culminating in a good try.

With the half time score sitting at 25-5 in favour of Peebles, both sets of coaches agreed to try and balance the game with Peebles gave Biggar their starting 6 and 8. All credit to Ryan Morrison and Jamie Atkinson for volunteering to swap shirts and for playing with as much spirit for Biggar as they do for Peebles. Ryan may be in a unique position as, having scored for Peebles, he then proceeded to cross the try-line for Biggar! Peebles maintained their hold on the game playing some of the best offloading rugby we have seen this season to run in a few more tries and round off a good afternoon. The try scorers were too many to mention individually but with the Backs scoring seven and the Forwards getting 3 the final score was Biggar U16s 12 Peebles U16s 56.

Our thanks go to Biggar for being such welcoming hosts and for fulfilling the objectives of the game at Under 16 level. Without the cooperation and willingness of both sets of players and coaches 32 lads would have had another weekend without rugby. The spirit of the game shines through again in Peeblesshire.
PS: can we have more support from Mums/Dads etc – the boys would really appreciate it & it does help their attitude on the pitch! This Sunday coming we have a friendly arranged v Ardrossan Academicals ay Hay Lodge k/o to be confirmed.

Jim,
