GYTES GOSSIP (PN 5 March 2010)

Once again the weather affected the club playing program over the weekend.

It was almost a complete shut out except for a decision at 8 AM on Saturday morning 4 hours before kickoff that allowed the Scottish Hydro Cup and Radio Borders Border League fixture against Melrose to go ahead at a muddy Gytes after it was determined that the pitch had dried out considerably from 24 hours earlier. True to form, Peebles upped their play against another border side and nearly made history with a tremendous effort.

For the majority of the game, Peebles led after getting off to a great start, leading 9 points to nil courtesy of Neil Warnock and were still ahead at 9-3 when the interval came. 3 further Melrose penalties dashed the Tweed Homes sponsored home side hopes of a first ever senior win against Melrose. In the last 10 minutes, pebbles were camped in the Melrose 22, the crowd egging them on for the penalty that would take the game into overtime, or even better the try that would win the game. It was not to be and Melrose now host Premier 2 hopefuls, Falkirk in Round 2.

With late call ups to the 1sts to replace David Harvey, Ryan McConnell and Neil Hogarth, the seconds found themselves short of 15 and only 2 front row players and cancelled a Friday night visit to Poynder Park, which may not have been played due to weather anyway. The 2 colts games also succumbed to weather as did the Piranhas who had another indoor session at the Gytes.

To tomorrow then. It is Premier 2 action at the Gytes when Kirkcaldy play in what was originally scheduled as the final outing of the league season, but is now quite a bit from that with 4 postponed games still to be played. The postponed games are on the SRU web site to be played at the Gytes  as Kelso 13 March (2.30 PM kick off due to Calcutta Game at 5PM), Jed 27th March, Stirling County 3rd April  with final game at Dunfermline on 17th April. These dates and times are the fallback situation if both clubs cannot agree alternative dates. Where possible these games will be played mid week or on cup dates so that the club can concentrate on the Kings of the Sevens spring program, which reminds me that the club colours will remain pink in support of Breast Cancer care Scotland. See web site at www.peeblesrfc.org  for more details.
Risotto4u will again be at the Gytes with a selection of hot snacks and beverages.

The 2nds have a re-scheduled Border Farm Championship game at Hay Lodge. The colts will be making a decision on whether to concentrate on completing the Border Semi Junior League or opt to bring members of the Colts U16 into the side and play some of the east of Scotland League fixtures, thus releasing some of the older colts to the 2nd team for their final games of the season.

... and finally join the Piranhas Easter Egg Hunt – Full details and downloadable car stickers and posters on web site.
