GYTES GOSSIP (PN 29 January 2010)

The Voice of Rugby, Rugby Legend  Bill McLaren, 86, died  Tuesday 19 January 2010. A sad loss to rugby. Prior to KO of the first game of the new year for Peebles 1sts there was a minute’s applause in his memory at Netherdale. Saturday saw just about every game in Scotland preceded with the same.

The first game since 12 December saw Peebles win the Radio Borders game at Netherdale on a chilly Wednesday night under lights. James Oakes and Ryan McConnell scored the all important tries with Steve gee kicking 2 penalties and converting a try. Ironically, both try scorers also received yellow cards and a 10 minute rest during the game.

Gala converted 4 penalties, winning the second half, as Peebles won the third encounter between them this season.

Peebles continued their winning ways on Saturday taking the points for Scottish Hydro Premier 2 and the Radio Borders Border League with a victory against Haddington who never challenged the scoreboard, except for a red card (why argue with the referee???). The win does mean a one place rise to 7th in the league and top place in the Radio Borders Border league Pool B.

It is a huge challenge tomorrow for them tomorrow when top of the table Stirling County visit the Gytes. Peebles have beaten better sides at the Gytes, but it will take a huge effort to retain their 100% record in the tens tomorrow, however the side is brimming with confidence and it should certainly be a tremendous game to watch.

Also back from an enforced absence is the upgraded Risotto2go. Relaunched as Risotto4u, they will be selling hot stovies, hot filled bacon/egg/sausage rolls and risotto along with a variety of hot and cold beverages and will be on site at the Gytes shortly after 2 PM.

The seconds and colts, despite their best efforts and no lack of energy and commitment were unable to emulate the 1st team success; but likewise have hard opposition away at Netherdale and Selkirk YC tomorrow.

Tonight in the Eastgate Clubrooms, Peebles & District Riding Club are holding a Quiz Night Fundraiser to raise funds. Subject to licensing approval, event is open to public, but may be limited to PRFC members and guests only. Please check with organiser.

Finally, we understand that the Scottish Hydro Cup / Radio Borders Border League game against Melrose on 6th February will be postponed and will be replaced with the postponed Scottish Hydro Premier 2 game against Biggar at Hartreemill.
