GYTES GOSSIP
(PN 18 September 2009)
Another 3 wins last Saturday,
though one would never had thought it possible based on the 1st
quarter at The Gytes when Dunfermline roared into a 13 nil lead and George Shaw
working flat out on the calculator getting a 58 points to nil tally if things
didn’t improve. However, that score of 13 and Trevor Keen coming on was
certainly unlucky for the visitors as Peebles woke up and started to sort the
failings of the first 20 minutes. Work in progress said Thorfinn as I left him
to analyse Donald’s video of the game on Sunday. Tomorrow it is off to Braidholm,
where the Tweed Homes men gained there first away win of last season, to play
GHA who drew at Jed last week.
The seconds had a convincing
win at Violet Bank against Haddington and make it 2 out of 2 in the Development
Cup. Tomorrow Netherdale provides the setting for their game against Gala.
The colts were in good form,
winning at Jed which made it the first time in about a year and a half that they
had won two consecutive games; Neil Hughes finding it hard to suppress a wee
grin as he watched the preparations for the bike race about to start on Monday
morning. It will however be a bit harder tomorrow at Violet Bank when Kelso
Harlequins are the opposition.
Finally the Colts U 16s got
their first game out of the way, losing out right at the end of the match when
Gala pipped them with a try. On Monday night they played their cancelled game
against Melrose at the Greenyards and lost out by the narrowest of margins –
just one point with the home side’s last kick of the game. Food for thought –
the games not over till the referee blows full time.
The Piranhas have a busy
weekend starting with their coffee morning tomorrow 1000 -1200, and if rumours
are correct it will be one of the best for a while so pop in and enjoy a
relaxing break from your weekly shopping. The boys also have a tournament at
Gala and training to keep them out of mischief over the weekend.
The request for assistance from
the Highland Games Committee did not go unheeded with club members assisting
with gates, parking, programs, tent erection and removal and even point duty for
the club president who was directing cars into Hay Lodge for most of the day.
The weather was kind and the club are still hoping that ongoing repairs to the
pitches will allow some games there this season. In the meantime Violet Bank is
proving a valuable backup; albeit missing some basic essentials.
Finally anyone fancy a trip to Wales? It used to be a biennial sojourn to the Arms Park with a game or two thrown in for something to do between visits to the Welsh taverns and watching the international. Well it’s starting up again in the New Year. On Friday 12th February a game has been arranged against Llantwit Fardre RFC. Players and Supporters interested in going should contact Jim Currie for information, register interest and to book. I suggest you also contact Ian Caldwell regarding International Tickets at the earliest opportunity.
