GYTES GOSSIP
(PN 29 May 2009)
Peebles RFC’s Club Dinner at
the Eastgate club rooms was certainly a lively and entertaining event. President
Jim Currie opened the event by welcoming the guests, whilst the Rev I M not so
Jolly aka Dougie Telfer aka Jim Telfer’s wee boy gave the pre-meal grace.
John Gordon, Walkerburn RFC toasted Peebles RFC with memories of his career as a
rugby referee amongst many other subjects, giving club captain an extremely hard
act to follow with his reply. As he has done all season, Willie Aitken took the
bull by the horns and entertained the members and guests with a lively reply.
Jim Telfer’s address on
Scottish Rugby was certainly thought provoking as he reviewed both his own
experiences, concentrating on Scotland’s stuttering moves into the professional
era.
A break in the Toasts allowed
Colts’ coach Grant Fraser to give brief appraisal of the past season and a look
to the future before naming Eddie Haldane as Colts’ Player of the Year and Kenny
Clyde as the most improved. Keith Nisbet then took the microphone to do likewise
for the 2nd XV before announcing David Brown as their choice for
Player of the Year.
Then it was Director of Rugby, Bob Hogarth’s chance to précis the 1st
team season, before announcing that the Felicity Barker Memorial Quaich had been
awarded to Ryan McConnell who is still waiting to hear if he will be included in
the Scotland squad for the under 20 World Cup in Japan later this year. The
award for 1st team Player of the Year went to Donald Sangster.
The final award of the night
was the President’s Trophy. This is presented to a volunteer who has given and
continues to give Peebles RFC exemplary service over the years and especially
the president in the season just ended. As the credentials of this member’s
career were read out by Jim Currie there were few in the room that had not
identified George Shaw as the recipient.
The reply on behalf of the
Guests was then made in the style of the Rev I M Jolly (Dougie Telfer) before
Vice President Lindsay Laird thanked members and guests to round of an excellent
evening and close proceedings.
True Story
A club stalwart was approached
by a young lady who vaguely knew him for help and assistance. She explained that
there was an elderly lady at the bus stop who was a little lost and confused and
trying to get to an address in Peebles. She had tried phoning the address but
got no answer, and did not know the location of that address herself, and was
reluctant to leave the elderly lady on her own at the bus stop.
Our man then went and talked to her and sorted it all out by getting the elderly
lady safely to the address with the minimum of fuss. Well done DS.
...and finally
Look out for the new draw to
replace the 200 club coming shortly.
