GYTES GOSSIP
(PN 1 May 2009)
The big story this week is that
Peebles will play at Murrayfield on Sunday 10th May at 2.00 PM.
The opposition will be Glasgow
Hawks who trailed Jed-Forest for most of their game, only taking the lead for
the second time 5 minutes from the end with a try, then another in stoppage time
to seal their place at Murrayfield. That result will certainly show the Peebles
players and coaches that victory is within their capability.
Remember to purchase your
ticket from the club for Finals day at Murrayfield on 10th May. At
present the committee are organising various transport and hospitality packages
that will be sold. See advert in this paper. Details will be kept updated on the
web site.
The Peebles victory in Dumfries
took some time to manifest itself, the opening score not occurring until Dan
Boughtwood’s first try in the 35th minute. Starting in bright, warm
and sunny weather, the game ended in thunder, lightning and a torrential
downpour, with even the stand suffering some minor flooding.
On Tuesday, Hawick visited the
Gytes for the BSPC Border League clash in which Peebles had to win by a mere 42
points to oust Kelso from a final place against Selkirk at Langholm. Alas,
whilst there were moments of pure brilliance, notably the attack that resulted
in David Anderson’s try, a combination of Hawick not having a front row, believe
that!!, and the whole match being played with uncontested scrums, the damp
conditions, a jaded performance, plus a spirited Hawick performance meant that
not only was the margin never likely to be achieved, defeat could well have been
snatched from the jaws of victory. In the end it was two converted tries to one,
and Kelso play Selkirk in the BSPC Border League Final.
The seven at Langholm lost out
in the first round to Watsonians. On Sunday at the Tweed Homes Peebles Sevens, a
strengthened side beat Langholm in the first round, but lost in the quarter
final to eventual tournament winners, Melrose who took the trophy after a 30
year gap. At least two (ex) Peebles players received winners’ medals. The event
was very strongly supported and although the numbers were slightly down on last
year, the rugby and all the family attractions were a great success not dulled
by the mid week call off of Premier 1 champions Ayr, and the no show of Heriot’s
late on the day. These two cancellations did however mean that Hawick YM
replaced Ayr whilst a President’s Team made up of Peebles players took a 14
point lead against Hawick before the latter went on to win.
Tomorrow, the first seven go to
Gala and then on Sunday to Earlston for the penultimate round of the Kings of
the Sevens, whilst the colts play their final tournament of the sevens campaign
at Jed Thistle Sevens. More details available from

There are rumblings about
whether the club’s money is in safe hands after one of our treasurers lost his
second set of car keys a couple of months after losing the first set. I can
assure you the money is in still safe hands; counting money is more fun than
looking after keys. The good news is that both sets have now been recovered, one
from a hidden pocket in a jacket and the other from a walking boot; hopefully
not one he was wearing on Sunday. So all’s well that ends with keys.
