GYTES GOSSIP (PN 24 April 2009)

It has been a busy weekend for the players of 7s and 15s. After beating Kelso a week ago on Tuesday, the 1sts went on to beat Glasgow Accies in the quarter final of the Shield and travel to Dumfries tomorrow for the semi-final at park Farm. A supporters bus leaves the Eastgate at noon and Dumfries at 6.00 PM. Bookings must be made to George Shaw, 01721 721423, 07748 016603, gwm_shaw@hotmail.com to guarantee a seat. Peebles are taking no chances fielding their strongest team with Craig Borthwick included, but not the injured David Paton, who we are told has an ankle injury that is not as bad as first feared.

The 1st VII beat Biggar in the first round of Hawick Sevens by 26 points to 5, but were beaten 38-12 by eventual tournament winners and host, Hawick in the quarter-final.
There was little luck on Sunday with Peebles going out to Jed-Forest in the first round.

Congratulations to the U16s who won the Drummond Cup after extra time in the final against Howe of Fife at Melrose last weekend.

Tomorrow to add to the 1st XV Shield game at Dumfries, the 1st VII will be not that far away in Langholm where they meet Watsonians in the second tie of the tournament starting at 2.00 PM. The colts go to Selkirk Youth club where they meet Kelso Harlequins in the second tie.

Then it is on to Sunday, the big day at The Gytes, for the Tweed Homes Peebles Sevens first tie is at 1.30 PM. The entertainment starts well before that with the Peebles Piranhas mini rugby tournament and training sessions with Edinburgh Gunners players commencing at 1145, and there will be all the favourite family entertainment around the pitch. See www.peeblesrfc.org for the latest information.
Peebles play Langholm in the 4th tie.
Note that it is a condition of entry that no alcohol can be taken into or out of the ground in containers.

In the evening the Eastgate clubhouse will be open to members and guests only.
Members are asked to ensure they have their membership card with them.
At 9 PM the Sevens Disco will commence. Entry will be by ticket only and photo ID will be essential.
Without a ticket or photo ID, access will not be permitted.
Drinks containers of any sort will not be permitted to be carried into or out of the club.

On Saturday morning there will be a coffee morning in aid of Peebles High School midis tour between 100 and 1200.

Finally

Is it a bird?
Is it a plane?
No it’s Superdan flying through the air with the greatest of ease.
We recently received the latest electronic edition of Scrum, and there on page 52 was a spectacular picture of the Tweed Homes top points scorer Dan in mid air taking a clean catch. Ross Ferguson looks on in amazement.
