GYTES GOSSIP (PN 17 April 2009)

Peebles promotion hopes were finally dashed last Saturday in the second half of the GHA v StewMel Scottish Hydro League Premier 2 match at Braidholm. From all accounts, the home side played the better rugby and with wind advantage, were 8-0 up at the interval; however in the 2nd half with 5 tries, it was all over. That meant that Tuesday’s game against Kelso had no bearing in our final position on the league as retain the third berth. It did however have a bearing on an awards ceremony coming up where Peebles and players were potential receivers. Courtesy Stuart Cameron, his calculations show that Dan Boughtwood should be a winner, but David Paton missed out by two tries, as did Peebles who needed 6 on Tuesday and made 4. In a close run thing by only 2 points, Peebles should claim best defensive record, almost losing out to Jed when Kelso made a strong comeback in the final Scottish Hydro Electric Premier 2 game of the season when they won 28 points to 17.

There is still the chance of a place at Murrayfield in the Shield, but first there is Glasgow Acccies to get past at The Gytes tomorrow, KO 3.00 PM. Our Fixture Secretary is also negotiating hard for a suitable date for the postponed BSPC Border league game against Hawick which will probably be towards the end of the month.

A yellow card at Melrose Sevens, was a factor in Peebles not getting past the preliminary round, whilst a weakened 2nd squad at Dumfries beat Langholm comfortably in the opening round but went out to Selkirk in the 2nd. The colts sevens at Hawick Wanderers/PSA were cancelled.

Tomorrow there is the choice of the Shield game at the Gytes for 15s fans and for sevens fans, a 1st seven will turn out at Hawick Sevens which starts at 2.00 PM to face Biggar in the 6th tie of the opening round, and a 2nd seven will be at Selkirk Junior Sevens which starts at 2.00 PM to meet Jed-Forest in the preliminary round, and the colts will be at the Gala Wanderers Sevens. On Sunday the 1st seven play Jed-Forest in the third tie of Berwick Sevens which starts at 1.00 PM.

Final planning for the Tweed Homes Peebles Sevens where Peebles meet Langholm in the 4th tie continues. Volunteers are essential to the smooth running of the day, so any volunteer who has not been contacted or allocated a job for the day should contact Bev, Crunch or any committee person.

Finally there will be a coffee morning in the Eastgate Clubrooms tomorrow 10.00-12.00, run by and on behalf of Tweeddale Rovers.
