GYTES GOSSIP (PN 3 April 2009)

Heart stopping stuff last week, as Peebles tried hard but at times already relegated Hamilton tried even harder, making for a right tight contest as the visitors first scored within a minute and went further ahead with a penalty before Dan stopped slip sliding away and landed a penalty and then came back strongly at the end with two converted tries. The two Peebles yellow cards didn’t help either  (Fendagh sill wisna best pleased by Sunday afternoon with the second but “at least he made amends when he came back on”) even as news slipped in that Stew Mel were 12-0 down at half time against Biggar at Inverleith. However at the final whistle with neither Stew Mel or Peebles picking up a bonus point, Stew Mel only have to win when the play GHA away next week to grab the second promotion spot so by the time Peebles play Kelso in their last game their target will be set.

Tomorrow the 1sts visit Bangholm to play Trinity Academicals in the Shield, a side that has not featured in Peebles fixtures for some time. A win there, gets Peebles a home tie a fortnight later in the quarter final.  A Peebles seven will also play at Haddington Sevens where their first tie is against North Berwick at 4.00 PM with the tournament starting at 3.00 PM prompt after Haddington take on West of Scotland in the Cup at 1.00 PM.

The colts play at Kelso Harlequins Sevens tomorrow; the hosts incidentally disposed of them in the first round at Peebles Sevens last Sunday which Haddington won beating Melrose in the final when they scored the sudden death try after reaching 19 points all at the final whistle.

The draw for the Tweed Homes Peebles Sevens on Sunday 26th April was made last week, when David Kilshaw of Cullen Kilshaw and sponsors BSPC made the draw live on Radio Borders with the assistance of Vice-President, Lindsay Laird, and the callipered up Vice Captain, Dale Clancy who has now had the knee surgery he has long been waiting for. Peebles play Langholm in the first round. The full draw is available on the PRFC web site and elsewhere in the Peeblesshire. This year Boroughmuir who defaulted a couple of years ago and Scottish Hydro Electric Premier 1 champions, Ayr, feature in a very strong line up which includes all the usual Kings of The Sevens contenders.

Tonight a Peebles team plays at Murrayfield. Let’s hope it’s a prequel to the 1sts winning there on Sunday 10th May. The Piranhas have been invited to play in the interval of the Edinburgh Gunners v Cardiff Blues, Magners League encounter which kicks off at 7.30 PM. Transport details for the Piranhas and supporters have been published in recent editions of the Peeblesshire, whilst the PRFC web site has up to the date information on obtaining tickets for the game.
