GYTES GOSSIP
(PN 13 March 2009)
The journey north to the Granite City last weekend proved
very fruitful when the Peebles performance was outstanding against a team
defeated by only 3 points at The Gytes in November. In a well controlled game in
the conditions, it was a tight first half, but as soon as the Dan Boughtwood
boot started functioning top notch in the second, Peebles pulled away and a win
was never in doubt, and at times the bonus point looked imminently achievable,
especially as the Aberdeen supporters near the action assured our Director of
Rugby that Tig had scored a try not given by the referee. In the opposition side
was winger Callum Scott from Peebles who is studying at Aberdeen University and
scored a try against Peebles at the Gytes in the earlier encounter. Playing on
the adjacent pitch for Aberdeen’s seconds against Stirling County was ex Peebles
Colt, Stuart Cockburn who is also studying at the same education facility.
Tomorrow with an early 1.00 PM kick off at The
Gytes, spectators will get a “three for the price of one” when Haddington visit
for the postponed Scottish Hydro Electric Premier 2 encounter. The game not only
doubles as a BSPC Border League game but triples as the game selected for this
season’s HAMILTON McCULLOUGH MEMORIAL SHIELD, won last season by Melrose. So
there will be some MAD people around the ground and club asking you for money
this weekend, but it will be for local charity, Make A Difference, which Peebles
RFC support. Please give generously.
It is going to be a busy end to the season for the 1st
team squad. The Shield draw announced recently, gave Peebles an away tie against
Trinity Accies on 4th April and misses the other two Premier 1 and 2
teams in the QF and SF, Glasgow Hawks and Jed-Forest, until the final at
Murrayfield on Sunday May 9th. Also still to come is the postponed
SHE Premier 2 match against Kelso plus the final scheduled match against
Hamilton and the postponed BSPC Border League game against Hawick and with
success at Trinity a Shield QF, all at the Gytes. Dates of the Kelso and Hawick
games will depend on progress in the Shield as well as the King of the Sevens
competition in April and May.
Last week the seconds were unsuccessful in getting
opposition and it now looks the same tomorrow.
Meantime the colts had a tough time away at Melrose last
week and face a big challenge tomorrow when they hope to reach the Tynedale
ground unlike the last time when they could not get closer than 20 miles due to
fallen trees blocking roads. This game doubles as a Lochcarron Semi Junior
League and an East of Scotland League match and will prove another tester for
the boys.
Today there is free entry to the following Internationals
Myreside 12:00 Scotland Club
International : Ireland Club International
Tomorrow, the Monday Girls will be in the Eastgate
Clubrooms from 10.00 to 12.00 running a coffee morning. Last year they ran a
very successful one to raise funds for Beltane costumes and tomorrow’s
beneficiary will be the Peebles Christmas Lights Association, which is very
opportune as there is a public meeting in the Eastgate Clubrooms on Monday night
at 7.00 PM when attendees will be invited to form a new committee to take over
the running of the Association.
Add to all that the RBS 6 nations on the big screen when
there will be a Homecoming afternoon and evening when the wearing of tartan is
essential for the Scottish themed day and evening. Beware the consequences of
forgetting to do so.
