GYTES GOSSIP (PN 20 February 2009)

It was a case of another dearth of rugby for the Peebles teams last week, although some of the 1sts and 2nds did get an hour’s training in the Gytes hall on Saturday before the internationals.
The Friday evening pre-match dinner for ex-Presidents and ex-Captains went ahead, and rumour is that all enjoyed a good time even though the game against Kelso was postponed for the second time due to the frozen pitch.

Ryan McConnell was a late call up to the Scotland U20 6 Nations side against France at Chalon-sur-Saone last Friday. Despite the visitors being only 6-3 down at half time, France pulled away for a 30 points to 3 win in the second half.

Ex Peebles player and brother of David and Donald, Calum Anderson, played in the narrow 13-12 defeat for the Scotland Club Side against France last Friday night.

Tomorrow sees the return of Garnock to The Gytes in Round 1 of the Scottish Hydro Electric Shield. Last time they were at the Gytes on 4 April 2007, in the same competition, they won by 26 points to 20. Then they were in the National Leagues and scrums were refereed on U18 laws to the detriment of Peebles who failed to fully adapt. The visitors are currently midtable in Premier 3, so scrums will be full contact which should give Peebles the edge in the tight and no excuses this time round.

In the Eastgate tonight there is a race night organised by Manor Sheepdog Trials Committee, and tickets are still obtainable by contacting Jim Currie. Some of the hardy farmers will be back tomorrow as sponsors for the Shield game against Garnock, so Border Cabs could have a busy weekend.

The seconds will again try to get their Border Farm Supplies Championship match at Scremerston played.

The colts are due to open their East of Scotland campaign tomorrow in a home tie against Murrayfield Wanderers; check noticeboard / web site for venue.
