GYTES GOSSIP
(PN 6 February 2009)
Another tense thriller at
Riverside Park in the Border Derby against Jed-Forest saw James Oakes score a
brace of tries, the second 3 minutes into stoppage time giving Peebles the
winning bonus point for four tries. Not only that a win against Haddington
tomorrow, weather permitting, and Stewart’s Melville becoming unstuck against
Scottish Hydro Electric Premier 2 League leaders Dundee HSFP, could see Peebles
take second spot. That conjecture has brought a renewed buzz to the Gytes’
faithful as the possibility of Premier 1 for the Tweed Homes men becomes a big
possibility. The last three games are going to see a few fingernails bitten well
down.
Postponed games against Kelso
(Premier 2) and Hawick (Border League) have been re-scheduled for Fridays 13th
February and 13th March respectively with 7.30 PM kick offs at The
Gytes.
With the weather forecast for
the weekend looking like more snow and frost, the club are already on standby to
complete daily pitch inspections and an inspection of snow shovels with the
possibility of snow clearing at The Gytes tomorrow morning starting at 8.30 AM.
If you are available to help, keep a listening watch on Radio Borders which we
will keep updated and also en eye on the web site for the latest information. If
pitch clearing is required we will need all the assistance that can be mustered
to repeat the successful efforts last season prior to the Morgan game.
The seconds were on the road
for the postponed Border Farm Supplies game against Haddington but again failed
to record a win going down 18 points to 7. Tomorrow, they head north to Myreside
for a friendly against Watsonians.
The colts’ game against
Tynedale was postponed as they will be meeting them later in the East of
Scotland League once it gets underway. The EoS league fixtures are currently
being reworked to deal with 2 other teams dropping out. Once it does get
underway, Peebles intend to use it to bring on next season’s colts’ players and
allow current players to be released for other sides including the seconds.
Tomorrow, however there is a trip to Scremerston for a game against Berwick.
So far two matches have been
played at Violet Bank. We have received players’ comments of the dog-fouling on
the pitch and we are taking steps to combat this by writing to the neighbours,
asking them to assist us in keeping dogs off the playing surface. The council
have also agreed to provide more dog litter bins in the area. On the other side,
whilst we have little control over spectators and opposition teams who park
legally, close to the pitch, we will highlight to them when possible that it is
a residential area and that alternative parking has been made available at
Kingsland School to alleviate any parking congestion.
