GYTES GOSSIP
(PN 30 January 2009)
What a tense game for the Gytes
faithful last week. Gala controlled the first half and Peebles looked out of it
being 10-3 down at half time, exacerbated by a third Gala try 2 minutes into the
second half and the writing was on all. Then James Oakes’ gallop from the half
way line sparked the urgency, David Paton got the first try, and then James
Oakes did it again as he left despairing tacklers in his wake for his own try.
An excellent second half built on the offensive defence that stole the game from
Gala, who if their kicker had been on form might have changed the result.
Tomorrow, its Riverside Park
and Jed-Forest who are in 4th place and also have a game in hand.
Peebles welcome back Ryan McConnell from Scotland U 20 duty and Trevor Keene for
this vital game to keep up Peebles’ hopes of a top 3 finish on track
The seconds did really well in
the first half keeping a very strong Selkirk side to 3 points for most of the
first half at Violet Bank in the Border Farm Supplies Championship before
eventually going down 7 points to 19. Tomorrow the seconds travel to Haddington
for their postponed Border Farms Supplies Championship game..
The Colts disappointed last
week, when Melrose Wasps ran out winners at the High School by 64 points to nil.
They will be hoping that they fare better tomorrow at Tynedale, firstly by
actually getting to the pitch and secondly to reverse the earlier defeat at
Peebles in the Lochcarron Semi Junior League. This game is still to be
confirmed.
On Sunday, Co-Treasure Donald
Swanson could be heard on BBC Radio Scotland when he was discussing one of his
other hobbies. Yes he does have other things to keep him out of mischief between
all the hours he spends on rugby. Donald has been interested in genealogy for
many years and has built up a family tree of well over 600. A couple of
relations have managed to evade his detection skills, and the program “Digging
Up Your Roots” was able to offer some advice on how to trace his cousin who
emigrated to the US and joined the USAF during the Second World War.
“Admission to all of this season’s Scotland A, Women’s and age-grade 6 Nations
home matches will be free.”
