GYTES GOSSIP (PN 16 January 2009)

It was certainly no baptism of fire in the cup for Peebles at Newtown Mearns on Saturday; ‘twas in fact the exact opposite as gale force winds, horizontal rain and icy cold conditions prevailed. 15 miles away 2 Irvine Kiwi players had to be hospitalised and the game abandoned with a minute to go and a nil all score line. The most talked about subject was the severe conditions that caught all of the weekend’s sport. The home side went into an early lead which they never conceded, despite a determined late assault on the Whitecraigs line.

Tomorrow, its back to league action and Peebles will be at Hartreemill, where the Tweed Homes men will want to put last week’s result behind them and try to get the double over over 8th placed Biggar.

2 days after Peebles visit to Whitecraigs, Peebles hooker Ryan McConnell played with the Scotland U 20 squad against Glasgow back up squad containing 12 full time professionals at the same venue. The Glasgow side ran out winners. On Monday 19th they will play the Edinburgh back up squad at Lasswade (KO 2.00 PM)

The second’s and colt’s game were affected by the weather last week, but tomorrow the seconds head for Riverside Park to meet Jed-Forest in the Border Farm Supplies Championship in their first outing since December 13th and the Colts have Berwick Colts at home in the Lochcarron Semi Junior League.
