GYTES GOSSIP (PN 7 November 2008)

Last Saturday, Peebles kept The Gytes fortress intact despite a 2nd & 3rd yellow card that saw them end the game with 13 men on the pitch allowing Aberdeen in for a late try that bought the visitors to the Gytes a bonus point, and could have resulted in the end of an excellent home run. FYI last visiting victors at the Gytes in a Scottish Hydro Electric League match were Gala away back in September last year. We note that Peebles have the lowest bonus point tally (2) but in Dan Boughtwood have the highest points scorer in the Borders.

It was also noted that the refloated risotto2go van made it safely upriver to The Gytes in time to serve the supporters, and no, the stovies did not taste of salmon.

Tomorrow, Peebles back in 6th place yet again, travel to 10th placed Hamilton which is the last chance of that elusive first away win before the mid-point of the current campaign. Kick off is at 2.00 PM. Note that because the Stewart’s Melville game on the 22nd kicks off at 12.15 PM (due to the Scotland v Canada game) the Sponsorship Committee are organising pre-match brunches. Contact David Swan.

The seconds lost to Melrose played at Caberston Haugh last week due the continuing poor condition of the playing surfaces at Hay Lodge and health concerns because of the stagnant surface water. The club are still awaiting a report from the council on what can be done to improve matters and a time frame in which improvements can be made, but it is looking ever more unlikely that rugby at Hay Lodge this season won’t happen this year. The loss of the facility is putting a great deal of pressure on the Gytes pitch and training areas and whilst the committee are spreading the net wide to look for alternative training and playing surfaces, these will put added pressure on finances. Notwithstanding, the seconds have been cleared to play Hawick under lights at The Gytes on Friday night in the Border Farm Supplies Championship with a 7.30 PM kick off. This gives you an excellent chance to come along and support the team and then join them back at the Eastgate Clubrooms after the game, which reminds me that you can book the club for almost any function, just complete the form available on the PRFC web site or from the club or email PeeblesRFC@btconnect.com.

The colts U16 squad lost last narrowly last week to Duns, whose players were all that little bit older, by 27 points to 20. An excellent effort by the youngsters. Tomorrow the colts will play Berwick in the Lochcarron Semi Junior league at the High School with a 2.00 PM KO.

Who would have thought that the likes of Rab C Nesbitt, Billy Connolly, Ali G and Zippy from Rainbow would all appear on the same night in front of a packed house in the Eastgate last Saturday, but that is what nearly happened as the Mimics impersonated those well known comedians and characters doing their best to raise the roof with laughter.

Reports of a UFO travelling round Peebles on Sunday evening were doing the rounds. No not a UFO in the sky, but one travelling along the High Street. It was an Unusual Farm Object with President Jim Currie at the wheel of a tractor towing a lit trailer filled with players that joined the parade organised to raise money for the Peebles’ Christmas Lights.

Tomorrow’s entertainment in the Eastgate is slightly more sobering, starting with a Piranhas coffee morning from 10.00 AM to midday (more details elsewhere in the Peeblesshire and on the PRFC web site) and then later in day the first autumn international clash when  Scotland v New Zealand will be shown on the big screen, KO 5.15 PM, all welcome. Be early to get a seat.
