GYTES GOSSIP (PN 24 October 2008)

Peebles recorded a 3 out of 3 wins last week, with the boot of Dan Boughtwood bringing him a 100% record with his 5 out of 5 penalties in the Scottish Hydro Electric Premier 2 border derby at The Gytes. Jed got the only try of the day, but the game was end to end stuff, a typical border derby,  with the result staying in the balance until the final whistle very shortly after the last score. Peebles move up to 6th, one point behind Gala who lost away to GHA.

The seconds had a win against the same opposition in the Border Farm Supplies Championship played at Hay Lodge where Euan Jackson scored a try at the end of the game to seal victory, and the colts beat Langholm Colts at Caberston Haugh.

Tomorrow, all teams are on the road, with the firsts away to 7th placed Haddington. Let’s hope the weather is not as bad as the cup visit there last season, horizontal, rain, sleet and snow albeit betwixt the occasional sunny periods. Although Haddington play in the Border League, it would be wrong to term it a border derby; nevertheless it will be a very strongly contested game.

The seconds will be at Philiphaugh where they hope to continue their winning ways and the colts are in Melrose.

Most of you will now know that Donald Swanson missed the Jed game the first home game he has missed for many a season, having been hospitalised for a very mild heart attack, so mild in fact he never knew he had had one. It now appears it could have occurred any time in the last couple of months, but he never noticed. He did however hear the commentary from Stuart Cameron on Radio Borders and was cheering the team on from the BGH. He was transferred to the Royal in Edinburgh for an angiogram and was due to be released on Wednesday. He keeps getting complimented on his fitness and resilience to have coped so well so far. Other than having to take it easy, he is in fine form, and looking forward to returning to the pitch side very soon as well as his trip to London next month.

A couple of weeks ago, ex Peebles player and now with Melrose, Scott McCormick, played for the Edinburgh back up squad against Glasgow, and is hoping for further chances in the pro game.
