Gytes Gossip

The Good, The Bad & The Dirty

The Good: Peebles forwards controlled the forward battle, pushing Biggar back at a rate of knots on several occasions spoiling any chance of attacking play from the visitor’s set scrums. Several times the scrum rotation gave the visitor’s input to the Tweed Homes men on the reset. In the loose scrums, rucks and mauls, the Peebles had a field day, with David Paton having probably his best game for some considerable time. It is notable that all three tries came from the forwards this week.

The Bad: The damp conditions, and driving rain on Saturday afternoon in the midst of Friday, Sunday and Monday being dry and sunny, meant a slippery wet ball, evidenced by the number of knock-ons in the game, and the lottery that was sometimes known as a lineout.

The Dirty: The players kit after the game. See Borders Rugby TV link from the Peebles RFC web site www.peeblesrfc.org for the tries and post match interviews with Bruce MacNaughton and mud caked Kiwi, Dan Boughtwood.

So it wasn’t pretty at times, but it was a tremendous forward display as Dan and Bruce re-iterated in their TV interviews on the Gytes Balcony. Dan himself, again in fine kicking form stays out front as the leading scorer in the Borders. Tomorrow it’s another hard border derby, this time at Netherdale. Who remembers last season’s game in Premier 3 in the snow, when after juggling the ball, Dale Clancy opened the scoring and the Tweed Homes men went on to win the day, albeit narrowly.

The seconds were forced into a change of venue and played their Border Farm Supplies Championship game against Haddington at Caberston Haugh when Hay Lodge was again deemed unplayable. They managed a hard fought win in Walkerburn. Hay Lodge has to date only seen one game this season and little or no training and one worried member has written to an SBC councillor asking for action. The Peebles RFC Secretary will also be sending a letter to SBC to find out what can be done to improve the playing surfaces in Peebles as The Gytes is already in danger of being over utilised. Tonight the Corus sponsored men will be in action under the lights at Mansefield when they play Hawick.

The colts were unable to score in their fixture last week, and are hoping for better things tomorrow at Kelso Harlequins.

In The Gytes reception area last Saturday, Corus officially renewed their sponsorship of the second team with the presentation of a jersey to Peebles President Jim Currie by Corus Business manager Gary Norman and Corus Account Manager Kevin Valerio (photo is left to right Kevin, Jim, Gary).

Development officer, Graeme Paterson is the PRFC Ambassador to Edinburgh Rugby. During the week, two players visited the Eastgate Clubrooms to present the club with an Edinburgh top. They doubled this up by then proceeding to Priorsford School to present last year’s P6 teacher and pupils with a signed photograph of the Scottish International Squad for their involvement in the Food Standards Agency (Photo l to r Casey Thomson, Ross Thomson, Amy Brash, Marc Teague, Gordon Teacher Brown Alan MacDonald, Rachel Hood, Annie Wright & Graeme Paterson)
