GYTES GOSSIP (PN 19 September 2008)

A second high scoring draw for Kelso in the Scottish Hydro Electric Premier 2 at Poynder Park last week meant a drop of 2 places to ninth in the table for the Tweed Homes men. Cutting down on penalties and yellow cards is a must. This was also the opening game in the BSPC Border League. Towards the final whistle, with the score tied, both sides could have clinched the win, with first Kelso’s Utterson missing a fairly easy penalty, than Dan Boughtwood going short from longer range, outside the Kelso 10 metre line. Dan Boughtwood was the top scorer with a try, conversion and 3 penalties; Duncan MacDonald adding his try just before half time. James Oakes made his Peebles debut at half time in this Border derby.

Tomorrow, bottom of the table Musselburgh, who are without a win this season, visit the Gytes and a big crowd is anticipated.

The 50-50 draw won 2 weeks ago by a GHA spectator who took home £125 will be on sale again near the gate. The draw at half time will give one lucky winner, half the day’s draw takings. Tickets will again be only £1; there is no limit on the number you can buy.

Also making the first appearance of the season will be Risotto2Go Catering Van. Hot snacks, drinks and other delicacies will be on sale near the main gate before and throughout the game.

The seconds unable to get opposition last week will be fresh for their game at Hay Lodge against Berwick in the Border Farm Supplies Championship, whilst the colts are away to Selkirk Youth Club in the Lochcarron Semi Junior League; another hard fixture for our young squad.

Congratulations to the Colts 2nds/U16 squad who won their opening John Lewis National U16 Youth Cup away to Foresters last Sunday by 35 points to 5 and go on to play Edinburgh BATS on Sunday 28th September.

The Piranhas will be playing in a tournament at Gala on Sunday. First game 1130, but players need to register by 1100 AND contact Jim King before tomorrow. More detail on the Piranhas Microsite at www.peeblesrfc.org

Meanwhile co Treasurer Gerard Bony who couldn’t make Kelso, stopped off at Caberston Haugh to watch Walkerburn who had a few Peebles regulars in the side take on Gala YM., and also assisted in some committee duties to help out and add weight to the Peebles-Walkerburn Association.
