GYTES GOSSIP (PN 12 September 2008)

Gytes men topple GHA

What a difference two men make. Peebles finished the game at the Gytes with 15 on the pitch and in doing so toppled the early league leaders and promotion hopefuls, GHA, from 1st to 6th and in doing so moved up to 7th themselves and in the final minute of the game, they were so close to a bonus point 4th try that might have moved them above GHA. Neil Clark’s disciplinary hearing allowed him to play last Saturday; whilst Adam has already missed one game as his was scheduled for last Tuesday night.

Our eagle-eyed ex president spotted an interesting connection between sponsor, First XV’s advert on page 2 of the match program and the early bath taken by the two brothers at Inverleith last week? First XV is of course run by Adam Clark and their advert might make us believe he had some kind of premonition when selecting the text and graphics. Look out for it next week when Musselburgh visit the Gytes.

Tomorrow, Peebles play in a Scottish Hydro Electric Premier 2 and BSPC Border League double header at Poynder Park. No doubt this will be a hotly contested game as the points count for both leagues. Kelso last week had a high scoring 26 all draw with Hamilton and along with the opening loss to Aberdeen Grammar lie in 9th place. Notwithstanding it will be another hot and hard game for Peebles, especially with the added spice of doubling as a Border League Game.

On Thursday, James Oakes joined the Tweed Homes men from Massey University and Palmerston in New Zealand and is included in the squad for Kelso on Saturday.johnoakes

Last week, the seconds came up against a strong and well drilled Gala 2nds. According to Peebles 2nd team manager, Allan Beveridge the outstanding Gala forward was Malcolm Horsburgh, son of Peebles player Brian who later moved to Edinburgh and joined Royal High School FP when they were in the Scottish Division 1 and had Iwan Tukalo on the wing.

At the time of writing the fixture secretary is trying get a fixture for tomorrow.

Last weekend, the Colts failed to reach their destination with all roads to Tynedale closed due to flooding and other obstacles. They left the area having cleared the road of one such obstacle - in their Venlaw Farm tracksuits - much to the delight of one local driver who thought that Venlaw must be an enormous estate if it had over 30 farmhands !

This week, the Colts entertain Hawick Wanderers at The High School and look forward to a good support. Ian (Skimpy) Johnstone is the ball sponsor.

They also look forward to a good turnout tonight (Friday) when George Shaw is the Question Master at the annual Quiz Night. Teams can be entered on the night so get along to the Eastgate if you want to win one of the excellent prizes on offer, or contact Neil Hughes in advance neilhughes.rugby@btinternet.com

On Sunday the Colts 2nds playing as an U16 side are away to Forresters in the 1st round of the National U 16 Cup. Supporters note the 1.00 PM KO.
