Kelso 19 Nisbet 21

Among older Peebles’ fans, Thursday’s fine Border League win over Kelso will have brought back memories of previous victories over the Black-and-whites.

None of them finer than when Peebles were greeted on their return from Poynder Park with the headline “Kelso 19 Nisbet 21”.

Saturday too saw Peebles in fine fettle at the Haddington Sevens with a squad of Craig Hunter, Dan Boughtwood, Donald Anderson, Dale Clancy, Neil Cruikshank, Neil Hogarth, Donald Sangster, Drew Moore, Calum Farmer and Adam Moffat.

Having dismissed Dunbar 45-0 and the host club 35-0, they ran out 31-17 semi-final victors over Watsonians.

Unfortunately for the Gytes men, they then faced Scottish Champions Boroughmuir’s first seven in the final!

Though tries by Anderson (2), Hunter and Cruikshank plus 2 Boughtwood conversions saw the teams locked together at 24-all with five minutes to go, the city men pulled away to win 38-24.

Said Director of Rugby Bob Hogarth, “It was a good way to start the sevens season getting a few ties under our belt before the Kings of the Sevens re-starts.”

Which of course is what happened the following day at Gala where Euan Jackson for Moore was the only change in the Peebles squad.

But when first-round opponents Kelso raced to a 19-point lead early on, they seemed well set to avenge the previous week’s Border League defeat at the Gytes.

However, a converted Hunter try narrowed Peebles’ halftime deficit to 12 points at 19-7 while his second touchdown made the score 24-14 for Kelso.

But though Anderson, Jackson, Farmer and Moffat combined to send the winger sprinting home to complete his hat-trick, it was a case of too little too late, as the referee blew for no-side.

Let’s hope for better things tomorrow at the Greenyards!
