GYTES GOSSIP
Stupendous Twenty-two
On the face of it, the fact that Tig Jocelyn, Andrew Sangster and Steven
Irvine all recently joined the Peebles’ Premier try-scorers list may not seem
the stuff of headlines.
But the trio’s names take the number of Peebles’ scorers in Premier
III games this season to a stupendous twenty-two. (Twelve forwards and 10
backs1)
Of the 128 tries run in by the Red-and-Whites, eleven each were scored by
joint top scorers Dale Clancy, Neil Hogarth and Donald Sangster.
Next came Donald Anderson, Trevor Keen and Alan Smellie with nine apiece
while Donald Macdonald had eight.
On the seven mark are Drew Moore, Neil Cruikshank and Davy Paton with
Ross MacNish and Dan Boughtwood scoring six each. (A complete list will be
published soon)
Meanwhile Saturday’s results mean that next season’s Premier II will
comprise 4 Border League clubs in Jed, Kelso, Gala and Peebles. Five if you
include Border League “new boys” Haddington!
Relegated to Premier II are GHA and Dundee with West and Selkirk
elevated.
Spare a thought though for Berwick. Despite beating Morgan on Saturday,
they join Murrayfield Wanderers (where Gerard Bony and Stuart Renwick recently
won the Villeneuve prizes) in demotion to next term’s National Leagues.
Of more immediate importance, Following their projected BSPC Border
League tussle with Kelso at the Gytes last night (Thursday), Peebles are on duty
at Sunday’s Gala Sevens and also at Saturday’s Haddington tournament.
The 3:00 starting time for the first tie at Neilson Park is because the
competition is preceded by the Haddington v Jed cup tie.
(And not - as has been suggested – because the press contingent need
the extra time to consume their usual half-ton quota of the excellent home
baking.)
