GYTES GOSSIP (PN 28 March 2008)

Pulling plug on Premier 3?

You’d think the 6-week gap in Peebles’ SHE Premier III programme would have left the Gytes men ring-rusty. Particularly when the absence of several influential players during that period gave the teams selected an unfamiliar, disrupted look.

And most especially when the missing players included key Kiwi, the injured Dan Boughtwood.

In the event however, any residual cobwebs were well and truly blown away with Saturday’s 95-5 howking of hapless Murrayfield Wanderers.

The same afternoon, Gala’s 34-8 win at Irvine and Kirkcaldy’s 32-13 success over guests Perthshire meant the status quo was maintained at the top of the table.

In other words, Gala are still a point ahead of Peebles who’re in turn five in front of the Fifers.

Seeking to pull the plug on membership of Premier III tomorrow, Peebles face a stern challenge in their final SHE fixture when Livingston visit the Gytes (KO 3:00)

For the Almond Park men – after Saturday’s 34-55 home loss to Dunfermline – are still in the third flight’s danger zone.

There they vie with Berwick for the second relegation slot, so they won’t succumb easily to the Red-and-whites tomorrow.

And while Ellon might yet put the cat among the pigeons when they travel to Gala, even less predictable is tomorrow’s outcome at Kirkcaldy where local rivals Dunfermline are the visitors.

Peebles Colts Sevens take place at the Gytes on Sunday afternoon 1:00pm start – please get down and be entertained by the cream of the Borders semi-junior players – your support will be most welcome.

Peebles play their final BSPC Border League match for the season on Thursday 3rd April at the Gytes when they entertain Kelso with a 7:30pm KO.

All players who have played in 1st XV league games this season are reminded that they will be photographed at the Gytes on Saturday 1:15pm.

And finally, you never know when weel-kent local rugby man Donald Swanson is next going to hit the headlines.

It’s not true however that he swapped the oval ball for the round one last weekend. For the “D. Swanson” voted Man-of-the-Match at the Dundee United v Motherwell game wasn’t Our Donald but a five and a half foot, nine stone former plumber called Danny. No, you couldn’t make it up!
