GYTES GOSSIP (PN 21 March 2008)

A Brace of Borthwicks

Last week’s “Gossip” may have concerned local brothers playing in opposing teams, but today’s edition features brothers in tandem.

For in Friday’s 24-14 BSPC Border League win at Langholm, nine of Peebles’ points came from fly-half Craig Borthwick who was partnered at halfback by his younger brother Stuart.

As well as Colt Stuart, Milntown also brought top-team debuts for fellow under-18’s Ross Ferguson and try-scorer Stuart Cockburn plus former Colt Jamie Graham.

Current Colts captain, the ubiquitous Euan Jackson, also played.

(Peebles’ other ten points on Friday incidentally came from tries by Calum Farmer and Craig Hunter)

But it’s back to SHE Premier III action tomorrow when Peebles’ penultimate SHE fixture takes the Gytes men to Murrayfield Wanderers (KO 3:00).

Places for travelling fans are likely to be limited on the bus which leaves the Eastgate at 12:45pm. So contact John Swanson now if you haven’t already booked a place!

Concerning promotion from Premier III, the two successful clubs will come from the trio of Gala, Peebles and Kirkcaldy all of whom have two games still to play.

In the latest table, Gala are one point ahead of Peebles who are themselves 5 points ahead of Kirkcaldy.

While both of the Fifers’ remaining games are at Beveridge Park, their opponents are testing ones – 4th placed Perthshire and local rivals Dunfermline.

And finally, for those fans who can’t wait until tomorrow for their next rugby ‘fix’, it’s reported that Jim Currie’s All Stars take the field at the Gytes tonight in a Clash of the Veterans. (KO 7:30).
