Success last Friday continues into Saturday
One interesting fact from the weekend was that in the two home games
played there were two sets of brothers in opposition. On Friday Calum Anderson
who appears in Melrose colours these days and brother Donald who still dons
Peebles’ Red-and-White. Calum’s two tries and all round performance earning
him the Hamilton-McCulloch Shield as man-of-the-match.
Saturday at Hay Lodge saw the second set of brothers in opposition when
Peebles Seconds met their Perthshire counterparts. With Adam Moffat playing for
Peebles, and scoring their only try, brother Simon appeared in the black and
white hoops of Perthshire.
And just in case anyone missed it or has been in hiding, Scotland
triumphed over the Auld Enemy to recapture the Calcutta Cup.
England supporters awaiting the arrival of the once again delayed 'Grand
Slam Express' are advised that due to a points failure at Twickenham and
subsequent derailment at Murrayfield, the 15.09 from Edinburgh has been
cancelled. Further bad news as the A1 south has been blocked by a large number
of wheel-less chariots. Police advise that any owner of a vehicle unable to
swing low, should call Scottish emergency services on 0900-GETITUPYEEZ, and
await the arrival of someone coming for to carry them home. Kind locals are
believed to be keeping distressed England supporters supplied with large amounts
of humble pie, although sour grapes are available if necessary.
But Friday wasn’t just about rugby. It was also M.A.D. night when
Peebles RFC supported the locally-based cancer charity in a series of
fundraising events which to date have achieved a sum in excess of £2000
including an amount of £360 raised at a previous sponsors’ lunch. Well done
indeed to all who took part or who contributed in any way to this magnificent
total.
This weekend sees both the Firsts and Seconds playing away from home –
the Firsts at Langholm in the BSPC Border League and the Seconds at Hawick –
see the team lists in today’s paper for details.
Tomorrow is another ‘Super Saturday’ in the RBS Six Nations with
three games starting with Italy v Scotland, followed by England v Ireland and
finally Wales v France the championship decider, and potential Grand Slam for
Wales (how doe the organisers manage to make the last game the decider???. All
three games will be shown in the club on the big screen, so get down early for a
prime seat.
There are still tables available for the Tweed Homes Peebles Sevens lunch
in the main hall of the Gytes Leisure Centre on 27th April, Peebles
Sevens Day .Please contact David Swan to book, or to discuss any other
sponsorship options for the day.
