GYTES GOSSIP

Go West to East Kilbride

After their recent exertions in the league, this week’s SHE National Cup draw brings Peebles a 4th-round clash away to East Kilbride (KO 2:30).

But the visitors’ ranks may not include Ryan McConnell, for next week sees the hooker off to Italy with the Scotland under-19 squad.

Whatever the line-up, tomorrow will be Peebles’ first trip to Torrance House since October 2005 when a Peter Whelan try helped them to a 16-9 league win over the hosts.

Since then, EK have been relegated to NL Division 1 where they currently occupy 4th place below Falkirk, Garnock and RHC.

Concerning tomorrow’s trip, the Travelling Faithful please note that, having turned up in such terrific numbers for the recent games at Gala and Kirkcaldy, it’ll be much appreciated if that trend continues for tomorrow’s tie!

Meanwhile, six of Peebles’ divisional bedfellows feature in three of the ties: The first two are Irvine v Livingston and Morgan v Kirkcaldy.

And thirdly, if Murrayfield Wanderers were hoping for a wee cup run to compensate for their lamentable league form, drawing table-topping Gala as tomorrow’s opponents wasn’t the best of ideas!

The other 5 ties with Premier III involvement are Marr v Dunfermline, Glasgow University v Berwick, Ardrossan v Ayr, Highland v Perthshire and Dumfries v Ellon.

And finally, while already mentioned Garnock were Peebles’ shock conquerors in last season’s Shield competition, they’re at home tomorrow to high-flying Selkirk.

Could another shock be on the cards? Or – as the Garnock faithful might put it  - could Shirley and the Boys be set to spring another surprise on Borders’ opposition?
