Unrivalled pies
Having often sung the praises of alien pies in the past from such venues
as Linlithgow, Dunfermline and beyond, it’s great to report that the promise
of unrivalled hot pies from Forsyth’s in Peebles helped sustain the efforts of
the 25-strong snow-clearing squad at The Gytes on Saturday morning.
(And they were delivered by no less an emissary than Donald Swanson.)
A brilliant effort by a group comprising players and coaches, committee
men and supporters.
Indeed so effectively did the squad do their job that the Irvine boys
(whose bus had just travelled through a wintry Leadburn) confessed themselves
stunned at the green oasis that greeted their arrival at The Gytes so soon
after.
In addition, the game’s survival saw both Adam Clark and Willie Aitken
score their first league tries of the season.
Which means that no less than nineteen players feature on the latest
Peebles try-scorers’ list.
A further benefit is that the Gytes men have improved their points’
differential by 79 in the last fortnight.
Meanwhile back at the clubhouse on Saturday night, the Tweed Homes Man of
the Match award for the visitors was judged by representatives of joint match
sponsors Scotch Lamb Marketing.
It went to Irvine’s South African No 8, Ruchin Filander.
The arbiter of the equivalent home award was Dave Kilshaw of joint match
sponsors Cullen Kilshaw.
For the second time in a fortnight, the Tweed Homes Man of the Match
award went to scrum half Drew Moore who managed to combine a typically gritty
performance with the sort of deft magical touches that would have left such as
Paul Daniels agog with wonderment.
