GYTES GOSSIP (PN 11 January 2008)

“There to be shot at!”

With Irvine the latest league visitors at The Gytes tomorrow (KO 3:00), all at Peebles RFC would do well to heed their Director of Rugby’s recent comment “When the team’s up there at the top, they’re there to be shot at!”

That’s not to forget however that Peebles recorded a 35-19 win at Irvine in October when Dale Clancy, Duncan Macdonald, Donald Anderson and the still sidelined Donald Sangster(2) had the visitors’ tries.

Also absent from home ranks tomorrow incidentally is Ryan McConnell who’s on Scotland under-19 duty against the Exiles at Percy Park on Sunday. Well done the St Ronanite!

Elsewhere this weekend, Peebles 2nds are at Selkirk on Border Farm Supplies league business.

Nisbet’s Notables will be seeking a repeat of their October defeat of the Souters when Rhys Wilson, Ross Neilson, David Brown and Steven Irvine had the home scores.

Likewise Peebles Colts. Away to Jed Thistle tomorrow, they’ll be hoping to reprise their Lochcarron league win over the Jags earlier in the season when the highlight was a 40-metre drop-goal by Neil Warnock.

And finally, Saturday’s Villeneuve draw in Fife was made by the estimable Ian Douglas of Berwick RFC. The winners were sponsors and keen Peebles fans Steve Brown of SAS Embroidery (UK) and Andy Pearson of Tweed Homes.

And for those eager for news of the “Guess the Score” competition, closest to the correct score of 13-9 to Kirkcaldy were Dennis Robson, Gary Whitson, Ken Bowie, Lewis Ferguson, Mhari Whitson, Dr. David Love and Ian Brown.

Most exotic guess was Magnus Murray’s 39-21 for Peebles, most parsimonious Marion Moore’s 7-6 (also for Peebles). Total travelling support was over sixty. Superb!
