GYTES GOSSIP
“Whipper-in Jim”
“Clash of the Two Pees” – that’s how match announcer Dick Askew
describes tomorrow’s Premier III tussle between 2nd-placed Peebles and
4th-placed Perthshire at the Gytes (KO 3:00pm).
Local fans still in the grip of Netherdale fever however would do well to
note that (a) Tomorrow’s opponents were the last team to knock Peebles
out of the Scottish Cup; (b) Peebles could only scrape a 14-8 win when the pair
last met in early October.
And ( c ) Perthshire gave Livingston a 44-7 thumping on Saturday. Enough
said.
Also travelling down with the seniors tomorrow are Perthshire Colts for a
Hay Lodge friendly with the Peebles under-18s.
“We may have failed to play as a cohesive unit in Saturday’s Arctic
conditions at Hawick PSA,” says Colts coach Graeme Paterson, “But a feast of
flowing, Barbarians’ style rugby is promised tomorrow!”
“An early Colts kick-off will hopefully allow fans to see both
games.”
Meanwhile Peebles 2nds, having shouted themselves hoarse at Netherdale,
are away to table-topping Hawick tomorrow.
Elsewhere, there’s good news of ailing players; while winger Craig
Hunter is aiming to return to action this weekend after a horrendously long
lay-off, vice-captain Willie Aitken hopes to be back for the Kirkcaldy game on 5
January – and possibly also for the preceding Biggar friendly. Good luck to
both lads.
Talking of Kirkcaldy – the club intends to run a supporters bus again
after Saturday’s success with the one to Gala – interested travellers should
contact secretary John Swanson – cost will be £5.
And finally, thanks are due to all involved in Saturday morning’s very
successful coffee morning in aid of the MAD charity.
Particular plaudits go to those who kindly donated home baking and raffle
prizes.
Not to mention club vice-president Jim Currie whose contribution to the
event’s success included increasing the attendance by acting as the
“whipper-in” of unsuspecting passers-by in the Eastgate. Well done all.
