Testing Fife trip for Peebles

Tomorrow sees the start of a tough second half to Peebles’ Scottish Hydro Electric Premier III programme.

For it involves testing trips to meet fellow front-runners Gala, Kirkcaldy, Ellon and Dunfermline.

And it’s Dunfermline (on the back of Saturday’s shock 22-all draw at home to Livingston) who entertain Peebles at McKane Park tomorrow (KO 2:00pm).

The Gytes men will be seeking to avenge their early season 20-27 home defeat by the Fifers. A game significantly in which Duncan Macdonald, Neil Cruikshank and Dan Boughtwood didn’t play.

(Now after only eight outings with Peebles, Dan is only 9 points short of his century.)

Also away from home tomorrow are Peebles 2nds who visit Haddington on Border Farm Supplies league business.

Saturday’s heavy home defeat by Gala 2nds reportedly owed much to the absence of  ‘regulars’ David Anderson, Martin Thomson and Iain Rodger. Not to mention Bruce Anderson, Sandy Smellie, Scott Hogarth and Sean Taylor.

On the plus side, Steven Brockie and Njord MacIver made welcome appearances.

The colts too lost last weekend by 31-34 away to a much-improved Melrose in the Lochcarron league.

“But we’re at home to Hawick Wanderers tomorrow,” says coach Greame Paterson, “They’ll find our recent bad patch has made us all the hungrier for success!”

And finally, spotted deep in conversation on the Gytes touchline on Saturday were the Murrayfield Wanderers president and the Rev. Jim Wallace.

The reported explanation is that our local minister and President Paton Wallace are in fact related.

So there’s no truth whatever in the anonymous suggestion that the two men were discussing the possibility on divine intervention being invoked on the beleaguered rugby visitors’ behalf. No truth at all George.

There should be some local interest on Border TV's Lookaround this week as Donald Swanson was interviewed for an article on his Torch Trophy Trust Award to be presented later this month by the Duke of Kent. The interview will appear this week, most likely in the sport section on Friday night (6.00 to 6.30 PM). Look in and see what fellow club members had to say.
