Another Gytes Nail-Biter
Not for the first time this season, there’s another nail-biter on the
cards at the Gytes tomorrow.
For Peebles, who maintained 2nd place in the latest Scottish Hydro
Electric Premier III table thanks to Saturday’s bonus-point win at Irvine,
take on 3rd-placed Ellon.
The Aberdeenshire outfit kept up their promotion challenge with a 51-13
home thumping of Livingston last weekend.
On the ‘plus’ side for Peebles however, tries against Ellon in recent
times have come from such as Donald Anderson, Willie Aitken, Neil Hogarth, Calum
Farmer, Trevor Keen and Neil Cruikshank.
Also at home this weekend, Peebles 2nds entertain Selkirk in the Border
Farm Supplies league.
In Saturday’s 21-39 loss at Jed, Peebles’ tries came from Bruce
Anderson and Sean Taylor with Paul Stewart’s boot responsible for the
remaining 11 points.
Worthy of note too was Jim Currie’s 80 minutes onfield plus appearances
by Bob Fletcher and Andrew Brown.
Meanwhile, the reported highlight of Peebles Colts’ 25-17 Lochcarron
league win last weekend at home to Jed Thistle was Neil Warnock’s 40-metre
drop-goal – not to mention a try of his own.
“It was a hard-fought win,” says coach Graeme Paterson, “But we
controlled the game after halftime. Tomorrow brings a step-up in level away to
Gala Wanderers. But we’ve nothing to fear.”
A vignette from a recent 1sts game in Perth: Alan Smellie breaks through
the middle and an excited Peebles fan shouts, “Keep going Alan, don’t stop,
the Ref didn’t see the knock-on!”
Cue Referee Balharry’s whistle and the instruction, “Scrum down,
Perth put-in.”
Exit red-faced fan.
No, you couldn’t make it up.
And finally, for those members who have yet to renew, their subs are
overdue and can be paid either direct to Membership Secretary George Tait or
they can be left behind the bar for him to collect.
